Garden Tips for August From Friends of Silloth Green

Houseplants
Most houseplants, for example Peace Lily, Money Plant, Begonia Rex and even some Cacti, will enjoy a holiday outside during the summer months. The rain will wash off the dust and they will appreciate the increased light levels. Find a warm, sheltered spot out of direct sunlight and slowly acclimatise them to their new home. Tender tropical plants like the Moth Orchid, African Violets & Streptocarpus will not appreciate this treatment!
Hanging BasketsPots & Containers
To keep these flowering as long as possible water them well when it is dry, in really hot weather you might need to do it twice a day & be aware of the wind as this can dry them out too,  particularly hanging baskets. Deadhead regularly and feed with a dilute liquid tomato feed every week.
