Story telling Chair for Silloth’s Community Garden

Story telling Chair for Silloth’s Community Garden

Much respect to Clive Firth and his merry band of woodcarvers  – a lovely bunch of people – for all the hard work they’re putting into making the youngsters in Silloth a story telling chair for the new Community Garden that’s being built on the corner of lawn Terrace and Criffel Street. It’s big, made of traditional green oak and features lots of fantastical carvings; a piece of Silloth art in the making!!!

Clive, who leads the Solway Woodcarving Group in Silloth, and a few of his team of volunteers are really busy day and night just now, building and carving the huge green oak story telling chair,  complete featuring carvings of heritage features e.g. pierrot, donkeys, also symbols from Green events such as the Kite Festival and Vintage Rally, and with Neptune carved as the back of the chair to illustrate the Solway Firth connection. If the carvers have time, they’ll add carvings of some of the wildlife in the Solway. After the opening ceremony, Tim Barker, Silloth’s resident thespian, will christen the 4 hundredweight heavy chair, and read the youngsters some stories. Heritage Lottery Funds are supporting the build and Friends of the Green sourced separate funding to finance the chair and have also bought sensory equipment, including a bug house for the sensory zone of the garden. As time goes on, more funding will be found by volunteers/Friends group to add to the features.
